Having driven all the way up from the Isle of Wight to Darlington, we were introduced on a cold, snowy, windy morning. I knew something was up as I had been given an extra special brush that morning and was looking very sleek and smooth.

Obviously this did not stop me having a good old bark and lunge on the lead but the moment William (I immediately called him Pack Leader 1 or PL1 for short) took my lead I knew he was the one for me. PL2 (Melanie) also went straight into my good books by giving me huge amounts to eat. After an hour of bonding, we all knew we were going to go home together but I did not realise how far 'home' actually was. Eight hours later I arrive on the Island and get introduced to my extended family, extensive homes and selection of cars. Looking back, it has been a tremendous 12 months and one I will remember for ever. I have now got an extensive group of friends, I run Dog Friendly Holidays with great passion and have become an important part of the community. But most of all I want to thank all those at Dogs Trust in Darlington for looking after me so well and ultimately introducing me to William & Melanie. Here is to the next 12 months and lets see what that brings.Hugo

Spring in here....on 8th Jan 2012

Dear fellow four-footed friendsI just had to share this view of the Isle of Wight with you.

Yes, even though it is just the 8th January 2012, I saw my first daffodils and so got PL1 to take a photo for you all. While the winter has been exceptionally mild, the appearance of yellow daffs just in my favourite yellow ball chucking area caused a certain amount of confusion. It was also accompanied by yelling from PL1 and PL2 to stop standing on the daffs. If you are thinking of coming down to enjoy this wonderful weather than I would be happy to tell you where the best walks are, including the daffs.See you soon.Hugo

My latest toy even has a Pack-Leader attached

It felt like Spring this morning when we went around Firestone Copse which for those that are not familiar with the Island, is very close to the Fishbourne ferry terminal. This is a relatively new walk for me and my packleaders (PL1 & PL2), especially the somewhat off-piste walking that I like to do. Paths are great but marshes, brambles and bracken are even better for sniffs. We came across a small clearing and it looks like some children had put a swing up which PL1 just HAD to have a go on. I am not sure it was actually designed for him but as you can see from the photo he seemed quite at home. What I noticed however was that the bottom end of the rope was knotted....just like my tug at home so I just had to get involved. This meant that I was able to tug on the rope and swing PL1 around with great ease. You can also see from the photo that one of my girlfriends (Grace) was attached to PL1 and also got swung around which she also seemed to enjoy a lot.Grace has to stay on the lead all the time unfortunately as once she gets the scent of a rabbit/bird/mouse etc her brain switches off the the nose switches on. Four hours is her maximum for disappearing which is not what is required when going for a gentle stroll on a Sunday morning.

This does not stop her getting into trouble as this next photo shows....He mum was less than impressed when we dropped her back!!!On the bookings front, we continue to get loads of our friends coming back to book for 2012 so if you have not yet chosen your preferred dates then do let me know and I will look after you as best as I can.See you all soon.Hugo

Pumpkin time - can you beat 60kg?

No!!! I gave this to Dogs Trust in Darlington as a thank you for looking after me for the last 5 months of 2010 and they raffled it at the Top Prize for their summer fair. Carole came down with Jess, her husband and another friend to enjoy Badgers Watch. Jess felt she needed to express her terrier like dominanace so I let her get on with it while I was cuddled by Carole. As you can see, this is me with my new best friends and they even bought me a present of a small statue as well as some more edible chew sticks. I will be proud to show all my new guests these when they come down.I know Carole is planning to have a chat with Dogs Trust to help promote the brilliant work they are doing so please do look out for her interview in the next magazine. If you are based in Yorkshire then do have a chat with Carole - she will tell you ho easy it is to get down to the Island event though it is a 640 mile round trip (I know - have done it).All the bestHugo

Ever wondered what the Isle of Wight is like in October?

This seems like deja vu but since I last posted a blog, the weather down here has been wonderful and I thought it worthwhile to update you all on what is going on. Now the summer has gone at last (those with a thick black coat will know what I mean), we have settled into glorious autumn with clear blue sky, ambient temperatures and light winds. To take the best advantage of this, we headed to Appley Beach which is next to Ryde at the North East of the Island. With the high tide just turning we started the walk on the dusty white sands at the top of the beach which in the summer are crowded with sunbathers but in October are "owned" by me and my 4-legged friends. The great thing about Appley Beach is that the tide goes out really quickly so within 20 minutes the firm "running sand" became exposed and this is where you can really get some speed up. My blog at the beginning of October referenced the undulations in the sand that make ball chasing so much more challenging but you have to see it to believe it.The view you get of Portsmouth and Gosport is quite amazing and well worth the walk itself. The photos here do not do it justice but with the ferries, sailing boats, navy vessels, hovercraft, tankers and cargo ships crossing, it makes a real spectacle.

Anyway, back to my walk. The great thing about this walk is that you get to meet new friends and today was no exception. Trevor (I think that was his name) had a real ball fetish which I can totally understand. Funnily enough, our interests were really aligned as his love was tennis balls while mine are the heavier rubber balls and we spent a great 20 minutes chasing up & down the beach. Size makes no difference when ball chasing is concerned although there did appear to be some confusion as to the precise timing of the end of the game (Trevor...you know what I mean) but all is well that ends well. Just about done now as heading off the Firestone Copse (great woodland near Wootton) but do think about booking up your own Autumn, Winter or Spring break and you can experience all that the Island has to offer.Happy sniffingHugo

<georss:box>50.72361996315368 -1.143093344543457 50.72864596315368 -1.133222344543457</georss:box>

"....stand next to someone bigger than you"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ky3FzIxTdmM/Tof_rYqXESI/AAAAAAAAAEc/ZvVTLuVuIJg/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B061.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658772577633898786" />
From my first time at Dogs Trust in Darlington, I was always known as that BIG handsome boy. Well it did not do me too many favours as most visitors thought I was too big. Well that was before William and Melanie then Pam and Maurice came to rescue me in January 2011.

Since then, I have still been referred to as BIG and definitely handsome but I thought I needed to correct some mis-understands that BIG is only relative.

A few weeks ago I welcomed Boomer and Noggin to Squirrels Watch. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VnPXH78rUrY/Tof_99uK7eI/AAAAAAAAAEk/TjyUXFxxFkk/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658772896819637730" />The names sort of give it away (they were not going to be miniature poodles)but it was only when I stood next to them that I actually felt small.

Weighting around 80kg, standing 6'6" on back legs and having a jowl action that made my own somewhat loose mouth look positively firm, I found them a little daunting. We went to play in the garden and I noticed something different about them. When ever I went to nudge them to play, it was like nudging a brick wall, albeit a furry one. Nothing happened...I mean absolutely nothing. They were so large that even me with my svelte 37.5kg made no impression on them at all. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Tw-ZJr_gAg/TogARr4U4mI/AAAAAAAAAEs/rQM3CitbDa0/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B062.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658773235627778658" />

I made sure we took a couple of photos just to prove the point and I would welcome your comments of support to my plight of trying to appear smaller than I really am.

And a quick note to Boomer & Noggin - thanks for coming down and I know you had a great time. October 2011 and we are still walking on the beach with your summer clothes (and collars) on. This weekend has seen temperatures nicely in the mid 20s which is just right to make PL1 and PL2 happy but not too hot that I can't enjoy myself on a walk. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UIQVBcH4CmM/Tof8UkhgCLI/AAAAAAAAAEE/j3dH1AkTpSs/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B091.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658768887146088626" />Here is a photo of Yaverland beach first thing in the morning. Many of my guests will have been here before but if you are just browsing my blog for the first time, let me tell you about it...

Cresting the Downs Road at Brading, you get your first glimpse of the sea at Yaverland, shimmering in the distance like an inviting blue oasis edged with a golden halo of soft sand. This sight stays with you as a memory when you dip through the ancient smuggling town of Brading and you skirt the base of the lush Culver Down. Then suddenly you are there....with the option of playing with tigers on the right (Sandown Zoo) or romping on the beach on the left in Yaverland.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CGrsMW5DaDU/Tof8rWFXv6I/AAAAAAAAAEM/gg8HTE38gSo/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B095.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658769278406999970" />
Once you have paid the local council for the parking (although there are very nice facilities there), you see the expanse of golden soft sand rolling into the distance. This really is the start of the Jurassic coastline as the cliff of Culver hold the secret of thousands of years ago, only occasionally releasing them for us to find after landslip.

With water depth no more than a few feet and limited rocks, this is the perfect place for a swim, ball chasing or simply meeting other dogs.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PYxnAWfMiTo/Tof9BG03EyI/AAAAAAAAAEU/jSPEpK1oyLU/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B099.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658769652268340002" />

Having written such a flowery description, I feel the need to get down there straight away but don't leave it too long before visiting Yaverland for yourself.

Hugo

New dynamic in beach walks - first Autumn Equinox

Hi Everyone

The Autumn Equinox was upon us today so I thought I would make sure that in fact there were just as many hours of darkness as day light. This did not appear to amuse Pack Leader 1 at 3am when I woke up and went outside for a walk - nor at 6:30 when the sun came up etc etc.

Anyway, we spent the rest of the day collecting our thoughts when at 5pm we went off to Ryde to pick up PL2 from the passenger ferry. We stopped off at Apply Beach at the end of Ryde and I really must recommend it to any of our followers and guests if they have not been there. Loads of space when the tide goes out with lots of hard sand to run on then soft sand at the top to give your coat a light dusting of sand that will stay with you all the way home.

The hard beach was the best thing however. I am used to chasing my chucker ball (long distance for those that don't know) on Yaverland Beach next to Sandown Zoo but something was different. The ball kept dancing from one side to another making it devilshly hard to catch. I could not figure this out at first but then I noticed the little ridges left by the waves was what caused the ball to swing around. By the time I had finished the game, I was quite dizzy I can tell you.

So once again, two great beaches for our guests are Apply Beach near Ryde and Yaverland Beach near Sandown. You must give me your opinion next time you use them.

Hugo

Bats in the belfry...well the roof anyway

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ED9bdFP8Ik8/TogBV9ydf5I/AAAAAAAAAE0/OkFEiyOeA84/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B033.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658774408666120082" />
What an exciting couple of weeks. Going back 10 days, I came across an injured bat in the garden. Not a common site and also a bit confusion as to what we could do with it. After checking on a website, we foundn that by using a small paint brush one could give it a drink...it really lapped up the water. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ae0F3m36ivg/TogCH6xEL8I/AAAAAAAAAFE/pHBZ9IcSMwI/s200/WF%2BIphone%2Bphoto%2Band%2Bvideo%2B011011%2B029.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658775266848419778" />We then called tha Bat Rescue and no, they did not turn up in Lycra with their underpants worn on the outside of their trousers. However, they did arrive much quicker than the NHS so well done to them.

Mr Batty was taken away to recovery after eating a few meal worms but while this was happening, we were told that we were very luck to have a nest of bats in the roof. Did you know that they are protected by law and deliberately injuring one could cost you up to £5000.

Anyway, after a week Mr Batty was returned and proceeded to fly around the garden snacking on all the bugs and flies that existed there. We all welcomed him back and now spend evenings looking out for him and his friends.

While we are not planning to open a new propery called Bat Watch, guests at Badgers and Squirrels Watch can check out the new occupants.

All the best

Hugo

What I love about greeting m guests

I normally go aroud to welcome all my new guests when the arrive but only stay for a few minutes so as to allow them to settle in. However I have have some amazing friends visit recently. Milo the cocker spaniel is my most recent friend and I met him on the walks in the woods behind Squrriels Watch. We had a great run around last Sunday morning then again today in Borth Wood. I know Milo's dad tried to get a photo but we were running around so much there was only a blur. Millie the 15 month old Great Dane was also a surprise as she was even bigger than me. We managed to avoid falling into the pond at Badgers Watch but used the whole garden for our races.

Well we have the rest of the summer to welcome guests and even have returning friends coming back for Christmas.

All the best to all my friends

Hugo

First swim on the wonderful Isle of Wight

Enjoying the hot hot days of summer...plus exciting personal development

I have been enjoying the company of some wonderful guests over the past two months so have not been putting paw to keyboard. So why am I doing so now I hear you ask. Well let me tell you...

Firstly, I went for my inaugural swim on Yaverland beach this morning. We woke early and drove over the Downs to get to the beach. It was a glorious morning at 07:30 and you could see the crystal waters in Sandown Bay, the sailing boats bobbing their way our of Portsmouth and Gosport and the kestrels gliding through the air looking for a spot of breakfast. When we got down to the beat we bumped into our new guest Laddie who had the same idea of an early start. Anyway, after a bit of ball chucking with Pack Leader 1&2, they decided to go for a swim. I was initially less impressed at this idea but found a spurt of enthusiasm to jump in when a couple of rowdy choc labs stole by ball. I was not going to stand for that so promptly grabbed my ball and swam out to meet them. After a bit of initial uncertainty, I actually found it quite relaxing (even with a ball in my mouth). I will most definitely be doing this again next weekend.

For those of you that like a good game of ball, I would definitely recommend going to Pets at Home for your supplies. You can get a bag of 6 rubber balls for only £4 ... a really treat when your owner chucks them into a bush and you loose them! You heard it here first.

Anyway, happy holidays to all our friends and I look forward to seeing you later this year or even next year (for those that have been efficient enough to get booked up).

Hugo

Catching up after a big break

Hi everyone

I really have been sooooo busy that I have not been able to keep my blog up to day. So here goes...

Holiday: great to get away but not what we expected. A very aggressive 'host' greeted us at our holiday cottage in Warwickshire and served to remind me that I really should not get upset with people in hats and with sticks...it does not give the right impression. However, the welcome baskets we offer for our guests really do add value to those staying with us so will definitely be a continuing part of DogFriendlyHoldiays.

Cars: ooopppps - do not tell Pack Leader 1 but he should really make sure that the new Landrover should be fit for purpose...breaking down in the middle of Warrwick (clutch) and then the A34(fan belt) with the latter having PL2 on board did not give great confidence in my new chariot. Certain 4x4Sales of Surrey came in for a little bit of bad publicity after these errors. Most recently the exhaust fell off which resulted in the engine placing all of its fumes into the passenger side. I think another trip to the garage will be required...but I still love it for it's surfing potential.

Magazines and publicity: we just got Dogs Monthly magazine where on page 62&63 PL1, PL2 and ME re featured as one of the HiLife winners. A lovely picture of all of us and hopefully it will raise awareness of the brilliant work Dogs Trust does for all my friends.

I will think of more to say over the weekend but welcome back to all of my eager followers.

Hugo

Holiday time...my first one

Off on my first holiday

If my life has not been exciting enough, me and my pack are off to Warrickshire for a short holiday. I am now experiencing what all my guests do when the come to stay at Badgers and Squirrels Watch. Which collars to pack...how much food to take for the journey....which bed or blanket to take etc. Then of course there is the planning for which walks to go on, best places to eat...and the list goes on.

Anyway, we are staying with at Baggins Barn, part of a mixed arable/pig farm called Clattercote Pottery. Here is there website for those looking for a holiday in that area www.clattercotepottery.co.uk. I have not experienced sheep before but given my predilection for small birds, I cant say I will be that bothered.

I will let you all know what we get up to when we get back.

Happy woofing

Hugo

Meet my new stylists...they are the biz

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s0BoJwhAVas/TZQsNX2ho5I/AAAAAAAAADw/QwXsztsKvKs/s200/Grooming.BMP" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590141645726262162" />Meet my new stylists including Donna, Bobby and the team. A wonderful and caring service, I have popped in a couple of times just to see how they operate and after receiving some crumpet and an Oreo biscuit, I was very impressed.

I toured the whole place and despite coming across a scary view of how they care for those of smaller legs, (don't try it on me!!!!) <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PG8Z_2UUwmM/TZQsgsaB8fI/AAAAAAAAAD4/LugSFVWy5OE/s200/grooming%2Bcradle.BMP" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590141977661403634" />although am told it is very relaxing and allows popper treatment of those fluffy and hard to get bits between the legs.

All my guests at DogFriendlyHolidays are welcome to book themselves in for their stay and will receive a discount on any treatment they ask for when quoting DogFriendlyHolidays.

I am booking my treatment in the next couple of weeks ahead of Easter so I look my best.

Catch you soon

Hugo

"Soft as a Setter...clever as a Collie"

This is the comment from Maurice and Pam who are my companions during the week. As my friends in Darlington were too far away to assess whether my new home is suitable (and BOY is it!!!), they checked with Gill.

So anyway, I needed my next set of booster jabs and also some rabbies shots ahead of some foreign travel being planned. Did you know that in order to travel, you need to get a rabbies shot now, then have it checked three weeks after to make sure it worked THEN have to wait six months from the all clear before being allowed to travel. Glad we got this sorted before any autumn trip to France to pick up win for Christmas.

Anyway, I got myself weighed and came in at c.35kg which is pretty much my running weight. Pack Leader No.1 (PL1) got a call from the Isle of Wight County Press today asking for more information on a news story they picked up off the internet.

As the County Press is the Best Newspaper in the South of England it was a real honour to be talking to them about PL1 & PL2 travelling 640 miles to pick me up in January.

The last time PL1 was in this venerable newspaper was over 15 years ago when he took the front page in relation to the RSPCA at Godshill. He was photographed presenting to a gathering of almost 200 people where he raised awareness of the urgent need of rebuilding the centre - following which over £500,000 was raised and the new Centre was built.

While my story is definitely on the warm and fluffy end, it again gives me the opportunity to thank those at Dogs Trust that helped me and to promote the work they do.

Speak to you all later with more from the Island.

Hugo

Hugo goes National in his support of Dogs Trust - exclusive

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_xpvn9CQIa8/TWTGa2XexOI/AAAAAAAAADI/07Mc-wXXXN8/s200/DSC00604.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576800403164415202" />
Hugo goes National in his support of Dogs Trust - exclusive

While I was sleeping – I really don’t get up much before 8am – my pack leader William was giving interviews on the radio across the length of England.

Starting with John Foster of BBC Radio Tees at 07:10, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_tees William provided a feel good story related to my rehoming from Dogs Trust in Darlington. The fact that William and Melanie travelled 640 miles to pick me up naturally makes me feel really special but also means that there is a home for everyone. This was the second piece of good news that morning as we also heard that John Miller who had his pet owls stolen had got them back.

William then spoke to Julian Clegg on BBC Radio Solent at 07:25, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_solent just across the water from the Island. This was a piece about how far would you go for your pet and so the idea of travelling from the Island to Darlington and back really fitted in well. He only had one slip up when mentioning that his “Elderly Parents” had a new lease of life now that I have joined the family. Julian though this was wonderful but when William subsequently spoke to said “elderly parents”, he got it in the neck. This was when I woke up so had to be told this after the event so I am sure it was not that bad and he meant it in the kindest possible way but hey ho, such is life.

Anyway, back to a game of tug and speak to you later

Hugo

Spring is here ohhh Spring is here

As Tom Leher says “Spring is here oh yes Spring is here”
After we had contact from the Dogs Trust media team, they asked for a photo of me with my new family. So we met up with some really good friends and went down to the church at Newchurch for a good walk then found a great place for a photo. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6TGQJcGf3qQ/TWLIERA0CnI/AAAAAAAAAC4/hnCKpZsTQjE/s200/DSC00609.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576239264249940594" />
Obviously what the camera does not show was that I had just “sprung” a flock of birds out of the undergrowth and was very pleased with myself although ended up with somewhat muddy paws.
After the photo shoot, we then went and visited the amazing display of crocuses at the back of the church. As you can see, it was a riot of colour and so calming that I ended up just laying in them while more pics were taken.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kraeBe64hBM/TWLIb7JYbWI/AAAAAAAAADA/kO55eJyHt6M/s200/DSC00635.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576239670697160034" />
I even bumped into a great black lab that was being walked by a lovely lady and her daughter as the neighbour can’t get out that much. Nice people…
I am reliably informed that the next bloom of flowers near Badgers and Squirrels Watch are:
1. The thousands of daffodil’s along Springbank – the sight of which almost makes you have to wear sunglasses
2. The bluebells in Borthwood (my favourite walk yet)
Do get in touch and I can point you in the direction of the wonderful displays on offer.
All the best.
Hugo

“Can you tell by the way I walk?” – is this normal?
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cY-SqOmPOzA/TWJojjkaOKI/AAAAAAAAACg/PAaP57MUWt8/s200/DSC00600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576134248690759842" />
Last week I told you all about my new tide clock – well this weekend I made sure I used it to full effect by getting my pack (William and Melanie) up for a long beach walk at low tide. We went to Yaverland beach near Sandown which is dog friendly all year round (handy for those guests coming in the summer). Having made sure they brought along my ball chucker with extra weighted ball for extra distance, off we went.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g_eCtM6nhko/TWJosASfzmI/AAAAAAAAACo/uMN1XqhB0bM/s200/DSC00606.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576134393839210082" />You can see from my rather focused gaze that I have really got the hang of this ball chasing idea and with flat surfaces, I can really get some speed up.

After a few warm up runs, we decided to measure my gait and was quite surprised with the fundings. Around 2.5x the length of the longest chucker was the maximum recorded stride length as shown in the photo which is getting on for 6ft. I look forward to see how this measures up against some of our longer legged guests this summer.

The end result of such scientific activity was exhaustion and I really did not know where to put my tongue – it seems to have grown 2-3 times its normal length.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IcEFTTyFDVE/TWJo1_oeNAI/AAAAAAAAACw/8CHthGppaw4/s200/DSC00605.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576134565461636098" />

Anyway, next time you are down on the Island, come and find me and I will be happy to show you the beaches.

Hugo
21/2/11

"05:54"... There is nothing quite like a vast expanse of smooth beach to run on, especially when chasing a tennis ball thrown from the "chucker".

When all my guests come down, all they now need do is ask me when the next high tide is and they can arrange their most convenient walks.

Happy walks

Hugo

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dog-friendly-holidays.blogspot.com/2011/02/0554-what-does-this-mean-to-you.html' title='"05:54"... Quite possibly….

I am seriously considering taking on new roles aside from running Dog Friendly Holidays and keeping my owners fit. So what is the new job I hear you ask – well I am putting myself forward as a dog toy tester and here are my first results.

Without resorting to Jeremy Clarkson’esk comments about the fact that some toys were as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike etc, I will attempt to provide insight into what works for a collie crossed with an Irish Setter (or an Irish Setter in a DJ)

If you can see the numbers, we started from No.1 to No.7.:

1. First up was my favourite toy at my wonderful home in Darlington with Dogs Trust. They very kindly let me take it home. Aside from the squeak (which still surprises me when I stand on it), this nobbly purple rubber toy is wonderful. It throws well, whether by me or my owners, has variety in its bounce and is above all resilient. This HAS to be top ranked and a worthwhile keepsake.

2. Oh dear…..shame to follow the best with the worst but Tough Toy tog bought from Pets at Home was useless. While promoting itself as TOUGH in those Tonka Toys colours I told you about last week, this two ball rope lasted only two days…YES…two days. This may be tough if you are a toothless rabbit with no interest in tennis balls but come on..I think this is a case of

false advertising. Anyway, if you want a tough toy, do not buy this.

3&4 – these came from Jollies and do exactly what they say on the tin..you can tug and pull these all you want and they do not break. Also, it should be mentioned that the height of the dog treat buckets means that a tall gentleman like myself can lean in and take a selection of nibbles while Dad is looking elsewhere. As a result, these are a close second to the purple call for in-door fun.

5. Oh no – did I say the purple ball won? I will have to re-think my marking scheme as No.5, the ball chucker has just entered my life. If only you could see me at the airfield. Big wide open spaced with a strong force 6 gale behind me means there is unlimited fun with this one. We got the extra long version and boy did I make it sing. I could not believe I could get so tired after 15 minutes with this toy but wow, it does an amazing job. All I have to do now is find enough open spaces to throw it. At £2.50, a real winner.

6. My chew ring is a nit of a keep sake and I have not really got into it yet. At almost £5, I want to keep it for best but everyone needs a little luxury at times.

7. Hmmmm – is this the best or worst? I love the fact that my owners put treats inside this ball but it is really hard to get them out again. Nevertheless, it keeps me busy and I hardly notice what anyone else is doing so must rank pretty high.

So, what do you think? Will I make a good reviewer? Maybe not as I seem to like everything except the Tough Tug toy. Feel free to send me more examples to test out and you never know, maybe it will join my Top 10 toys of all time.

Hugo

7/2/11

The importance of knowing who you are...

What a week and as before, a few high a low points but overall, BRILLIANT

Best parts included :
1. Going to Pets at Home to pick up some entertainment. Came across a great new range called Tough Toys, branded in yellow and black and reminds my owners of Tonka Toys in the 1970's. We picked up a bril toy with two tennis balls and really tough rope in between and yes, everyone loves to tug with me. I know I have to let them win at the end but boy...do I give them a tug for their money.
2. Meeting up on my new FREE walks with three black labs and a gob by terrier. They had just come out from lunch at the Pointers pub http://itunes.apple.com/uk/app/tripadvisor-hotels-flights/id284876795?mt=8 so were full of the joys of spring. This is really what good walks are all about.
3. The other thing good walks are about are birds....I seem so thane a real passion for finding them although they do not share my enthusiasm and want to fly away. In fact my mum and dad have taken a keen interest in my interest so you had better read further...

Downside of the week
I hate to say it but I am still not totally settled with strangers. I really respect a strong command and control approach and anyone who thinks they want to ignore this are politely reminded that I am a collie at heart. Causes a few surprises but without exception, these strangers soon become firm friends.

Well as mentioned, mum and dad have bend taking a keen interest in my passions namely rounding people up (with gentle encouragement where required) and chasing birds. After a bit of digging, this is what they came up with..I am an Irish setter in a DJ. Not sure if my friends at Dogs Trust were aware of this dressing up trick but will leave it to you to decide my background. Either way, I am really affectionate but soooo intelligent.

Have a geat week and look forward to catching up next week.

Hugo

How to settle in with your new environment - the Hugo story

Hello everyone - glad to be back in touch after another fun week in my new home on the sunny Isle of Wight. I can't believe it has only been less than 3 weeks since I was sitting with my friends in Dogs Trust in Darlington waiting for this obviously barking couple to pick me up after only seeing my photo on the website (who says internet dating does not work!!).

Well my new pack certainly know how to manage a collie with loads of mental stimulation as well as regular walks. I have figured out that I am not so much a working collie but rather a gentleman farmer type with occasional romps in the fields but certainly nothing more than 5 miles without knowing there is a lift at the end of it. This has allowed me to build my confidence in meeting lots of new humans without having to give them "what for" in the barking department. Now this confidence is building, I could see that without a firm pack leader I could get away with loads of stuff on the 'non-approved' list but my world is complete with my extended family.

In fact, with regards to my extended family, this also includes all of my friends that stay at Badgers and Squirrels Watch. The previous blog mentioned 3 blond bombshells staying at Squirrels Watch and while I did not meet them directly, I did have a nice chat with their Dad so hopefully when they come down next time we will get a chance to meet. My welcoming skills will be extended this weekend with an Alsatian and also a Spaniel staying at Badger's for the weekend. We got ready for them by refurbishing the decking, raking the leaves and feeding the fish - it all looks lovely.

So - what were the high-points for the past week?
1. My new massive kong - this is the best bit of kit going around2. Delivery of 15kg of Arden Food from www.zooplus.co.uk (especially when I managed to get my head stuck in it when no one was looking)
3. My first lamb bone although this was narrowly beaten by the bread left out for the birds
4. My first real off-the-lead walk

...and on the low points
1. finding out that the passenger seat in my dog car could not accommodate my bottom (see attached photo).
2. Having my tail brushed after getting lots of old thistles stuck in it
2. Missing my friends in Darlington
Anyway, as you can see, the upside outweighs the downside so again a good week.

Please do arrange to come and visit me at www.DogFriendlyHolidays.net and I can show you all my favourite walks.

Hugo

New walks on the Island...what fun!

Well I have had my first full week on the Island and I am now seeing why all our guests at Badgers and Squirrels Watch love coming back year after year. Let me give you a quick run down...

On Saturday, we all went down to the beach at Yaverland. We drove over the downs and saw lovely views all over the Island and within 10 minutes we had arrived. After paying our 60p parking (well worth it as far as I was concerned) we ran onto the beach. Even though the tide was high and the sea was rough, there was still about 30ft of beach available so we wandered or 'bounded' along, sniffing the seaweed, sticks and other bits and pieces that have such wonderful smells. Because I was so engrossed in the smells, I did not notice the waves coming up round my feet but as I gave such long legs, it would have to be pretty large waves to get my tummy wet. I wonder if I will enjoy swimming in the summer?

After the beach walk, things got even better. As I live next door to BW and SW, all that we needed to do to get the papers and some milk was to walk through the small woods, along the field and 50 yards of pavement and we were there. I told you about my lack of joy on reflective jackets and it just happened that someone wearing such an awful thing was at the shops so we did not stay long. Anyway, it was an extra walk and really good fun to be able to do something helpful.

Saturday afternoon was gardening time with everyone getting involved in raking up the last of the leaves. I have to say that leaf raking is not as much fun a ball throwing and I managed to persuade William of this fact although he did not get as much joy out of this activity as I thought he might.

In the evening, Pack Leader No.1 went up to see our guests in SW. I decided not to go up with him as even though I know these are my duties going forward, I am still a little unsure of people at the moment. This was a bit of a shame however as there were three beautiful blonds (golden retrievers!) in residence and I would have lloovved to meet them. Well maybe next time.

Sunday brought fresh joy with all Pack Leaders (PL) wanted to get out before the supposed rain (which never came - I am beginning to see why this part of the Island is so wonderful)and we headed for a quiet walk near the Sandown Airfield. Only 3 minutes by car, we could have actually walked there from BW and SW but wanted to do shopping afterwards. We ended up by meeting Sue, Alan and Sandy the lurched that run a menagerie with the most amazing range of birds, including European Eagle owls that looked almost as big a me. Worth a visit next time you are down. With lovely fields and views, I can see this becoming a favourite of mine.

In the afternoon, we then visited another walking spot which is just behind the church at Newchurch. I don't know why they call it "New" as it was built in the 12th Century but my PLs were married there 21 years ago so it must be pretty cool. Anyway, enough of the church, the walk was fab and I even met a few other dogs there that I was able to say hello to.

So, after all that, I am now chilling out in the lounge trying to rank my walks. I loved all the local ones but the beach walk has to be the best. The main reason is that I could see next to the beach was a path heading up to Culver Down so I could have a two-centre walk in one. This will be top of my list when the weather warms up a bit.

Will keep you posted on new exciting things to next week.

Hugo

Looking forward to 2011

Hi everyone

Well we have turned the year and now are looking forward to bounding into 2011. Bookings over Christmas were great and while January and February are normally quiet, we have got a number of bookings. Some are coming over to: visit relatives; others are regular repeat guests who just love the empty beaches and roaring log fires in pubs; some come as part of a house search when thinking of relocating to the Island; and others have booked to maintain links with breeders of various dog breeds.

Whatever the reason, short breaks on the Island are fun, great value and much more rewarding than you may think as the weather is almost always the best in the UK. Give me a call (well William then) and we are sure to be able to accommodate you.

See you soon

Hugo

Hugo introduces himself to Dog Friendly Holiday clients

Well hello everyone

My name is Hugo Franklin and this is my first blog as one of the DFH team. I only joined on the 10th January 2011 after William and Melanie drove all the way up to Dogs Trust at Darlington to interview me then bring me back to the Island.

Before I write this blog, I want to thank both Sweepy and Henry for being such amazing role models. While I did not know them personally, I have heard so many great stories that I can only hope to emulate their professionalism when welcoming guests to Badgers and Squirrels Watch.

I originally came to Dogs Trust from Ireland where I had a pretty yucky life. I then got rehomed in March 2010 but we did not get on so I came back to Darlington in September 2010, essentially chilling out until William & Melanie brought me on-board. I am so excited and have so much to say but to start things off, here are my immediate impressions:

1. WOW - Darlington is a long way from the Isle of Wight: so to all those guests who I know come from the Midlands, North of England or even Scotland, thank you for making the effort. You will find the gardens fantastic for stretching your legs after the long drive and your owners will also enjoy the welcome basket with a little glass of something to help them settle in.

2. Reflective jackets: well I have a bit of a thing about these bits of clothing. I can't figure out whether it is the lack of sartorial elegance, the way they flash in the light or if they remind me of the dustman who keeps taking things from my driveway BUT I really have to let anyone wearing one know that it is unacceptable. Obviously this can be a big of a problem on Wightlink or Redfunnel as there seem to be loads of people wearing them but gives me a chance to exercise my voicebox.

3. Balls: well unlike reflective jackets, I can't get enough of them. Big/small/white/purple/smooth/knobbly...they are all so much fun. Maybe next time you come down we can have a game together.

Anyway, this was the first of many blogs and I will put up some more photos when I get them downloaded.

See you soon

Hugo

RIP Sweepy Franklin

It is with deepest regret that we inform you that Sweepy Franklin passed away today. After 16 years of faithful service and four years with DogFriendlyHolidays, she will be sorely missed. To all our guests that have come back time and again, she loved the company of all your dogs. Every Saturday she tried to say hello to all guests whether leaving or arriving and this was the special flavour of the dog friendly experience built up over the years. We will be making a special donation to Dogs Trust in her memory. I am actually keeping my eyes open for the heron that went and snaffled most of our goldfish. We have put a few more back in but they have decided to hide under the lilly pads.

Dog Friendly Holidays remains the holiday of choice for all numbers and types of dogs and with our second property (Squirrels Watch), we can now cater for even more this year.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Sweepy

Collies, mini dachunds and 'Cookie'

We have just taken a booking from 3 collies in August as well as 3 mini dachunds in March. Before they arrived, we had guests from Badgers Watch come up to view the new property and they instantly fell in love with the place. As there were four of them plus their collie, they could immediately see the possibility of renting both Badgers Watch and Squirrels Watch at the same time for their respective families and dogs. Not only could the two families have a holiday together, they would also be able to have time alone after a busy day sightseeing on the Island.

Our first guests were Pam, Ray and of course Jimpy and they came over on the Saturday evening and immediately fell in love with the place. The spacious hallway, tastfully decorated bedrooms, lounge and conservatory along with a well equiped kitchen was topped only by the large gardens. Many an evening they spent enjoying a "sundowner" while Jimpy mooched around the garden.

Here are their comments from their stay:
22/8/09: Thank you for allowing us to use your lovely home, and for all your hospitality. We have had a fantastic break. We made full use of the beautiful garden (and so did Jimpy the lab). The weather was kind to us and we will be back".

For those who have not yet seen Squirrels Watch in person, new photos and a virtual tour were taken today and will be posted up in the next week or so.

Pplease get in touch if you want to join us here at Dog Friendly Holidays.

William

New www.dogfriendlyholidays.net is due to relaunch soon with our lastest cottage called Squirrels Watch. But as we all know, families come in all shapes and sizes and all to often, the commercial organisations that do not understand dogs restrict the number to one or two. Even then, they make an additional and disproportionate charge for them being on holiday with you.

Well, at www.dogfriendlyholidays.net, we welcome three dogs as standard but the winner of the most dogs staying with us is Sue, Steve and Jane with 6....YES 6 dogs. They were all keeshonds (http://www.justdogbreeds.com/keeshond.html) with amazing pedigree and even had Crufts awards between them.

...and you know what, after each visit (they have stayed more than once), Badgers Watch has been left in an immaculate condition. Just goes to show you that dog owners are the tidiest people around.

One of the best places to stay - OFFICIAL!

We are proud to announce that Badgers Watch, the flagship propety of DogFriendlyHolidays.net was in cluded in the top 50 places to stay in England, Scotland & Wales for 2009.
